Day trip to Gmunden, Upper Austria

Gmunden, day trip destination in Upper Austria

A television series has made the Schloss Orth palace famous. Round off your trip to Gmunden with a cruise on the picturesque Traunsee. A genuine souvenir from Upper Austria: Gmundner pottery. After seeing how the ceramics are produced you can buy the typical  local  "Grüngeflämmte" (mottled green) pottery.

Who isn't familiar with the opening scenes from the television film "Schlosshotel Orth". It is obvious why this charming little town with its southern European atmosphere was chosen as a backdrop. The picturesque Traunsee, the surrounding mountains – plus a historic old town with magnificent town houses from the15th. and 18th. centuries –  a dream destination!

As far back as the Imperial Age Gmunden was one of the Salzkammergut's most important hubs. The imperial salt miners who settled here ensured that the "white gold" was transported by barge across the Traunsee to Gmunden and from there down the Traun to the rest of the empire.
The salt barons were followed by Viennese citizens who chose Gmunden as a summer break destination. Many artists were also attracted to the unique landscape of the Salzkammergut around Gmunden. The pretty town on the banks of the Traunsee was visited by the composers Brahms and Schubert as well as the poets Lenau, Hebbel and Scheffel in the summer months.

As far back as 1862 this impressive place in the Salzkammergut was awarded the status of a spa town. The town still retains this distinction today: Gmunden is, as then, a town noted for its culture and atmosphere; a place both full of life and romance at the same time. The Renaissance town hall with its recessed balconies and Austria's only ceramic glockenspiel is worth a visit for those interested in culture, as is the Three Kings altar by Thomas Schwanthaler in the parish church or the gothic buildings of the s "Kammerhofe", the former administrative seat of the imperial Kammergut. A visit to the lakeside Orth palace, sited on an island, is not to be missed, nor is a guided tour in the famous pottery of the famous ceramics firm Gmundner Keramik.

People looking for sporting challenges won't be disappointed either. Whether a mountaineer or water sports fan, the Traunsee holiday region can fulfil everybody's wishes due to its ideal location between a magnificent lake and the beautiful mountains. An unforgettable holiday memory is further guaranteed by the availability of excellent restaurants on your days out
