Day trip to Austria's most modern zoo

A varied attraction for young and old. Look  at gorillas and giraffes, take a walk through a tropical rain forest or admire the acrobats of the air in the world's biggest bird of prey facility that you can walk in. You can experience the fascinating wonders of nature in Schmiding zoo. The highlight for the children: extensive adventure playgrounds.

Schmiding zoo developed from the Schmiding Bird Park, Austria's biggest bird park. It was opened in 1982. Over the years other animals were introduced and the bird park then became Schmiding Zoo. A modern, animal-friendly zoo concept characterises the zoological garden near Wels. Mammals, reptiles and birds share a biotope as in the wild. Walking along the 4 km long circular path gives the visitor a fascinating insight into the animal world. Native and exotic animals await visitors young and old.

Plains Gorillas, Siberian Tigers, Nile Crocodiles, Red Pandas, Zebras, Great Green Macaws and many other exotic species live in the zoo near Wels. The gorillas are a special attraction at Schmiding Zoo. Schmiding Zoo is Austria's only facility where you can admire these gentle giants.

The Siberian Tigers are also unforgettable. A tunnel goes through the middle of the world's biggest predatory cats extensive domain. Being able to walk through the bird of prey facility is an absolute highlight. 25,000 m² of natural vegetation was covered over with nets and now offers a spacious environment for Black Vultures, Griffon Vultures, White-headed vultures, Lappet-faced vultures, Steppe Eagles, Kites, Condors and other birds of prey. You can observe these majestic creatures in flight without bars obstructing your view. Equally impressive: the giant tropical house with a wide variety of birds, marmosets and tamarins, Squirrel monkeys, crocodiles and a pair of sloths.

Children can get a close up of the giraffes at feeding time. You can even feed the giraffes with hay pellets from a specially constructed 5 metre high viewing platform. You can wonder at Nyala antelope, Oryx antelope, Horn Raven, Black Crowned-Crane, Saddle-billed Storks and many other animals in an environment designed to reproduce the conditions of the African savannah.

And afterwards there are three large adventure playgrounds to explore! A day made for children!
